Happy Valentine’s Day my fellow geeks and nerds. With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching I wanted to write something to celebrate the holiday. Now I could be like everyone else and talk about the greatest video game romances such as Mario and Peach, Link and Zelda, or comics such as Spider-man and MJ, Superman and Lois, and Batman and….Robin? but as anyone who follows knows I don’t like to stick to tradition or rehash what everyone already knows.
Instead I’m going to talk about some characters I think need some love in their life. The ones that don’t have that princess always waiting in another castle.
Sassy-Phoenix and I have been playing a new game type in Uncharted 3 called Grenade Dodgeball. It’s in the lab playlist if you want to try it out. It consist of two teams on opposite sides of a flat red and blue field with a wall up in the middle. The only way to score kills is to lobe grenades over and kill your opponents. A simple concept with tons of strategy. The grenades spawn on the field and you can pick them up as you run over them, but there are pillars to the left and right that spawn mega bombs and cluster grenades if you choose to climb up and grab. Also people can throw your grenades back and you and vise-versa. This makes it especially tricky when a grenade is coming at you and you’re not sure if you can throw it back or not because the grenades can only be returned once.
Ah Febuary! The time of the year were we celebrate groundhogs, dead presidents, black people, and Valentines day. So what better way to start off the month then celebrating my brothers from a different color mother. When I play games online, I always pick “the black guy”. That one token man that brings laughter, wit, and badass-ness to the table. I don’t know why I always pick the black guy, maybe I like to be diverse since I’m a white guy and I already know what that’s like. When I play left 4 Dead, I’m Luis. When I play Ghostbusters, I’m Winston. In Gears of War I’m the Cole Train baby! Giving the chance in Transformers Iplay as Jazz bitches. In Street Fighter I like my fight money” Barlog. Hell, when I play Spider-man I like using the black suit. I’m sure the list would go on if I think far enough back.
If I had to give an award to most bad ass black dude, it’d probably go to Zasalamel from the Soul Calibur series. Just look at this guy, He could kill just by looking at you much less using his GIANT..ASS…SCYTHE. Oh and F*&$ you Namco for not putting him in Soul Calibur 5… assholes.
Anyway this is to you my dark brethren. Thanks for the good times, Sorry about that whole slavery thing, and most of all, thanks for peanut butter.
…don’t worry ladies, I’m getting to your day next.
P.S. This was meant as a fun recognition post. Everyone stay calm.
We finally did it! AriesKnight and myself along with our friend, RedSmooth, beat 50 waves of Horde in Gears of War 3. Now before you “experts” go and say, “no big deal.” or “I’ve done that multiply times.” let me tell you a a story. One filled with blood, sweat, determination, and team work that only Raging Gamers could tell.
Like most of our games, we start out with five people. By wave 20 we lose our two random people either because they don’t like the map selection or aren’t getting enough kills. I don’t know the exact reason. I just know we leave negative feedback on anyone that screws us over. So by wave 20 it’s AriesKnight, RedSmooth, and myself. We don’t come across problems until about wave 35. The three of us are fighting for our lives. One of the biggest advantages we have is that between AriesKnight and myself, we have a sixth sense when it comes to working together. We’ve played multiply types of games together to know each others play styles and and know what each other is going to do before we do it. As for making it to wave 50, with the eagle eye precision of AriesKnight and his Torque Bow ( Bow & Arrow), Red Smooth and his explosive ingenuity, and my mechanical ability to keep the SilverBack (giant ass robot) functioning, we each brought a skill set that complimented each other even without the extra two men we’re down by. Once wave 50 arrived. I had us in a corner funneling enemies toward us and AriesKnight set us up a row of enemy shields to protect us from gun fire. RedSmooth delivered the final blow to the final Locust enemy and after four hours of none stop shooting, we finally did it.
We try to be pretty modest when we achieve a goal in our games, but this one is different. it doesn’t matter that it was only a ten point achievement. It could have been worth nothing. The fact that we not only completed it, but did it with two men short makes it one of our biggest gaming achievements. We did it on normal difficulty, with three people, and we did it in one shot from wave 1 to 50. We challenge you to do better. Until then my raging gamers.
Let me get something out of the way, I don’t want to beat the same dead horse when it comes to video game violence and parents being parents. I feel like we as a society should know better than to blame video games and guns exclusively for the terrible things that happen in the world. I know a lot of people get it, it just feels like the majority don’t.
Guns aren’t the problem, video games aren’t the problem, people are. Let me ask you this, the children who passed during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting; do you recall any of their names? If so, good for you. I shamefully say I can’t. Part of it is my fault; part of it is the media shoving all this blame on video games and even more so on guns. I can’t tell you how sick I am of seeing gun nuts on Facebook acting like the government is going to waltz into their homes and take anything that has a trigger away from them or the anti-gun people talking how all the guns are to blame and give no responsibility to the people.
Oddly enough this incident reminds me of the comic “The Watchmen”. If you haven’t read it, I suggest you do. What I pulled from the story after reading it is sometimes we need a horrific disaster to bring us as a country together. It happened during 9/11 and it’s happening again. Between The government making stupid rules and our economy crumbling beneath us, we are in dire need of some help and inspiration. Unfortunately, I don’t have a solution. I think Batman said it best when he said “I need to be more than a man, I need to be a symbol.” I would love nothing more than to put on a cape and inspire people. Sadly running around in tights would probably get me arrested.
If not that that what though. I’m not writing this to give a solution to our problems; I want you to think of your own solution. What can you do to inspire people? It could be anything big or small; I feel every little bit helps. We’ve had plenty of disasters in the last year, Isn’t it time to inspire change?
Sorry for the somber and serious post this week. I felt like it needed to be said and I was the one that wanted to say it. Anyway, I’m sure we’ll return to our fun and rage inducing game talk soon.
The last few weeks AriesKnight and I have been playing Ghostbusters online. What I’ve realized while playing is unfortunately it’s a dying game. This made me think of other dying games that I love and wish they weren’t in their dying state. Below are five games which are dying online and I think you should give them some attention.
