Retro City Rampage: A Nostalgic Reminder

Well as I am writing this on the last day of 2012 I thought I would talk about the game which for me was my favorite release this year. Retro City Rampage is a love letter to those gamers like myself who grew up in the 80’s watching Saturday morning cartoons, collecting Garbage Pail Kids and of course playing Nintendo all day.  Released in October of 2012 on the Playstaion Network by VBlank Entertainment RCR is a top down open world action game much like Rockstar’s GTA series but re-imagined as an 8-bit NES game. I won’t get too much into the history of it all, but if you want to know more then please hit up wikipedia to get your answers. This game is packed to the brim with 80’s cultural references from Knight Rider, Ghostbusters, The A-Team and more NES references than you could possibly imagine. Of course each reference is a parody to it’s source material clearly done for laughs. For me it was a reminder of a simpler time in gaming when games came in cartridges, multiplayer meant you and a friend in the same room and reading gaming magazines for all your gaming news, tips and tricks. I could go on and on about this game but I put the official trailer from VBlank so you can see and judge for yourself. If you want to talk about the game itself or wax nostalgic about the NES days then leave me a comment below. A release is also upcoming for both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii in January. Enjoy the trailer and as always game on gamerz!

Game of the Year I think not.

Before the year ended I wanted to give my thoughts on The Walking Dead Game by telltale and how it seems to be getting game of the year rewards. I was waiting for the game to be finished before I picked it up and found it on Xbox 360 for $10 during their one day end of year sales.

First off I want to say I loved the story. It really is better than the show and I played it in a manner of two days just to see what happens. I also love the choices I get to make and like Heavy Rain, you will make some hard decisions. The art style of the game also works well with the source material. That however is where my likes end.

The Walking Dead

I can’t count how many times the game stuttered or lagged as I was watching a scene play out or transition into a new one. I just can’t comprehend how the game is stressing to load up while plenty of other games can do it without a hiccup. Then there are the choices. When you have to choose between who to save and what to do, in all honesty the game doesn’t change much. People will be with you in place of ones that you sacrificed,  and certain decisions will detour down an ally way other than a rooftop, but the end results will all end up the same and that’s my biggest gripe.

Why does this game deserve game of the year? It didn’t do anything that we haven’t seen before. Gameplay wise Heavy Rain, A Playstation exclusive does it much better. At least in Heavy Rain, your main characters can die, which can alter the story drastically, without hiccups mind you. The Graphics, aka art style are pleasant but again with the choppy loading it detracts from the experience. The story is really the only thing the Walking Dead has going for it and it gets broken up every time I have to see a stutter or lag.

I feel like Gamers have pigeon holed us into two classes; the class where you have the artsy fartsy snobs and the class where you have generic bro shooter 20XX. I like Halo and Call of Duty along with The Walking Dead. Do I think they are game of the year worthy? No.  Although fun,  there is too much been there done that with Halo and Call of Duty, and The Walking Dead isn’t polished enough, hence it’s $10-$20 price tag. Honestly I would give it to Borderlands 2. Any developer that can take a consumer who hated your first product and make love the next one deserves Game of the year. Borderlands 2 took the same formula from the first one, but amped up everything else, and that really shows. Hell, Give Lollipop Chainsaw Game of the Year. There’s an art driven game that is unlike anything else before it.

Whether you love me or hate me, see you next year! KoopaKingJr

2012: My Top 10

happy new yearThis year for gaming for me at least has been good at best, but this could also be due to the fact that I am what I like to call “underemployed”. Basically a college graduate working in a job unrelated to his field not making the kind of money I should be making. As such gaming as a hobby can become rather expensive and I haven’t had the oppurtunity to play even a quarter of the titles released this year. My hope is that both professionally and personally 2013 has great things in store and will be a phenominal year. Anyways on to my top ten games of 2012

  • Retro City Rampage
  • Lollipop Chainsaw
  • Resident Evil 6
  • Protoype 2
  • Dishonored
  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Asura’s Wrath
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Dust: an Elysian Tail
  • The Walking Dead: A Telltale Game

Again there were several other titles I would’ve liked to have mentioned but they were games that I didn’t get a chance to play. Most games I purchased in 2012 were titles from last year whose prices were within my budget so I think there will be a repeat of sorts in 2013. My highly anticipated title for next year out in January is Sega’s Anarchy Reigns a pseudo sequel to the Wii’s MadWorld. I am a huge fan of the brawler/beat em’ up genre and have been patiently waiting for this release. Anyway gamerz have a safe and Happy New Year!  See you in 2013 till then game on.

I Ain’t afraid of no ghost!

There is an old saying, “You don’t know what you have (or got) until it’s gone”. The saying especially rings true when applied to the multiplayer into what is criminally an underrated title for the PS3 and Xbox 360, Ghostbusters: The Video Game.noghost

In November both Sony and Atari shut down the multiplayer servers for the PS3 and cited the reason as both a significant decline in player volume and the cost of keeping said servers up due to the lack of player activity. Naturally this angered many fans of the game and franchise which then led to the creation of a Face Book page simply titled, Save Ghostbusters PS3. I myself didn’t find out until December when I was getting ready to play with friends on-line and came across a connection error code.  Further research verified my worst fears as I eventually learned that the game would no longer be available to play on-line for the PS3.

To say I was angry at the discovery was an understatement and my completion percentage would forever remain at 92% mocking me at my apparent inability to platinum the game. To be fair the PS3 version was just as plagued with glitches as the Xbox version was but Atari apparently only ever addressed the issues on the Xbox.  That being said I quickly purchased a used copy for my Xbox and was also able to acquire working codes believe it or not for both the golden proton pack and additional character skins for multiplayer.

As of this article I have only one on-line achievement left to attain and two for the campaign. My goal is simple 100% on at least one system for bragging rights and credit has to be given to Koopa for aiding me in this endeavor. Gamers for those of you who have never played Ghostbusters then I highly recommend you pick up a used copy, but understand that the PS3 version no longer supports on-line and you’re experience will be limited to the campaign. If you’re fortunate enough to have an Xbox 360 then by all means purchase a copy and start playing for your on-line achievements. There is no telling when and if Xbox will be targeted to have their servers shut down but as of right now the multiplayer is fairly active. It’s good to be back on the website writing and I hope to put out material on a somewhat regular basis. As I have recently graduated from college and addressed other responsibilities in my life my time is now a little more open. Game on gamerz!

New Year, New Outlook

So it’s been a while. I haven’t written in a very long time, but between getting engaged, helping family, and getting ready to finish school, where does one find the time. Well hopefully I’ll be making time. I really want to start writing at least once a week again. AriesKnight and I have also been kicking around ideas for a video show for this site and youtube (Ideas are always welcome). Just remember the more feedback and views the more content we can deliver.nerd_rage

Anyway, a little bit of gaming talk before I sign off.

  • This year wasn’t to stellar for gaming overall.
  • Games were either overhyped or underhyped.
  • I’m still not ready for a new generation of consoles.
  • I love my Vita!
  • Playstation All Stars is fun but broken as hell at times.
  • AriesKnight and I really are the dream team online.
  • The Will U is too little too late.
  • My Fiance is kicking ass  in games now 🙂
  • My favorite Games this year were Borderlands 2, Transformers Fall of Cybertron, Sonic Racing Transformed, Playstation All Stars, SSX, and lollipop Chainsaw.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun New Years….Well, mostly everyone.
